Ingrown hairs can happen to anyone at anytime and at any point in life - in particular if you are someone who waxes. With living such busy and hectic lives where trying to balance work/studying and having a social life can seem impossible, we understand that to ask us about ingrown hairs may not always be the first thing you'll remember when you are here at the salon for your appointment!
We are here to share our knowledge with you on what ingrown hairs are and why we get them, the best way to tackle them and how to minimise your chances of ending up with any! So what exactly are ingrown hairs? As the name suggests, ingrown hairs are those which have curled round and managed to grow back on themselves into the skin, or have grown sideways and been unable to ever actually come out of the skin. They have the appearance and texture of a small raised spot, normally with puss inside. Often enough these small red spots can become infected and irritate us - definitely not what you want after dedicating so much time to waxing!! What is the cause? There are numerous factors as to why we can suffer and develop these problematic little hairs. One of the main factors of ingrown hairs is that your hair follicles may be clogged. A follicle is the small holes in your skin where the hair grows from. These follicles can become clogged up with dead skin, resulting in the hair being unable to grow upward and outward - which is exactly what we want! There are a number of other factors which can contribute to the cause of these pesky ingrown hairs. If your hair is coarse or naturally curly, you may find ingrown hairs a more common problem due to the hair automatically wanting to curl back on itself and grow into your skin. What should I do when I have an ingrown hair? The best thing to do when you come across an ingrown hair is to leave it be. As tempting as it may be, do not touch or squeeze the spot - this may cause an infection as the skin will be more prone to them at this point in time. You may gently exfoliate the skin to help remove any dead skin, but make sure you take care when doing so. How can I prevent and deter an ingrown hair? The best way to prevent an ingrown hair that we would recommend is to exfoliate the affected area. Exfoliation will remove the dead skin cells from the top layer of your skin which will reduce the likelihood of them appearing on your skin! We recommend using Aloe Clear Ingrown Solution. We stock this in the salon, and is great for use after waxing! It contains a unique ingredient combination of Aloe Vera, willow bark and multi fruit acids which are great for giving your skin the hydration it needs! We hope we have managed to share and pass on our knowledge of ingrown hairs onto you! If you have any more questions feel free to drop us a message or just ask the next time you are in for your appointment - we'll be more than happy to answer all questions - ingrown hair related or not!
